I think Lynch is at his best when working with someone else's source material. Projects entirely his own are too muddled by the mess in his mind to translate coherently to the viewer.
In this one I think he found a perfect complement: a strange, slanted world to which he could apply his dark palette, his slanted notion of reality.
I haven't read the book which I think puts me at an advantage in commenting on the film. The elided plot doesn't bother me because I don't see it as central to the film's message. the important thing is the creation of a world. And what a remarkable world! The stylistic mergers of epochs, the odd pathologies, savant-like talents, the strange expressions of motion. most importantly though the creation of a single underlying consciousness. Almost every character who has lines of dialogue also has internal monologue. This is annoying at first, but turns out to be brilliant. First, it's the best way to convey Herbert's Jungian influence, which was significant; it reinforces the telepathic theme; and it effectively conveys an enclosed cosmology, a world that belongs not to us but to the characters on the screen.
Gone are the days when studios grant license to mavericks like Lynch.

Xolit (1984) full movie watch online dubbed. I just love everything about this film, a wonderful and fantastical story which truly transports you to another universe, a stellar cast including the ever great Patrick Stuart and the stunning Sean Young, can't name everyone but the depth of skill across the cast. including STING just helps to set it apart from anything else I've ever seen. I have never really understood why this was not more of a success when it released in the late 70's. I came to the film already knowing the story from the novel (and the computer games) and the film for me really built on the mythology and brought it all to life and right into my front room. For anyone wanting a fantastic story with a great cast, lots of well choreographed action and a couple of hours of indulgent escapism then I thoroughly recommend this film. I hope the 2019 remake will not do this original an injustice.
